mota24
A downloadable game
Mota is a classic strategy role-playing game where players face the challenge of ascending a multi-leveled tower brimming with monsters, puzzles, and treasures. The player’s goal is to rescue the princess trapped at the top of the tower, engaging in battles with various creatures and collecting keys to unlock the doors leading to higher levels.
The original Mota, also known as “魔法の塔” in Japanese, was the world’s first Magic Tower game, released on December 23, 1996. It established the fixed-value strategy gameplay that set the standard for the genre and became a beloved classic. The English version, titled “Tower of the Sorcerer”, was later translated and ported to Windows 95.
This game is a remastered version of the Fat Rat Studio’s 24-level Mota v1.1.2, The game retains the original values and progression, but modifications have been made to the controls, UI, and combat presentation according to my own ideas. The control feel has been optimized, and some dialogues have been revised.

Nice game. I had contact with TotS back in the day as a kid (the english/windows version which was passed around in CDs with free games) and just now found it spawned a genre. This sequel of sorts plays much better than the original, the only downside is that it is dramatically easier even for new players - to the point giving the cross to the fairy (receiving the ~30% boost in everything) is completely optional until the second last floor. Was it intended to the last staircase to be spawned only after we give her the cross?
PS. I'd like to present a few suggestions: A new game+ mode (or "back side") and a difficulty setting (maybe different starting stats/items, the rest staying the same)
The staircase design on the 20th floor is intentional. In the original version, there’s only one save slot, and once you enter the 21st floor, you can’t exit. This setup ensures players get a fair shot at defeating the boss on the 21st floor. Plus, there’s a hidden floor after the 21st. If players could submit the cross later, it would make the hidden boss easier to beat.
I love TotS for its minimalist RPG style. Actually, I’m planning to create my own version of TotS with a major overhaul of the combat system. The challenge will come more from using relics and floor layouts rather than just numbers.
Thanks for your reply, it really motivated me!
Thank you friend. It's nice to see the genre thrive, even if it is hard to come by in english. Not that it's my native language or smt but I can manage - unlike the magic tower games in chinese which I can't make a lick of :( It would be great to be able to play a remake of the original with a proper ending too.
Just played again yesterday, and found out how to reach the hidden boss. Needless to say, I wasn't even remotely close to having enough stats to beat it even after collecting all items/gold/experience. Are you sure the boss is beatable on a normal run? I don't think it's possible
ps. Also, are there secret passages in this game? I couldn't find any, and it also seems I couldn't find any kind of secret item either, e.g. to counter magic damage from mages
Good for you!
Pay attention to the fairy’s dialogue. After collecting the three staves, you need to talk to the fairy to break the seal. otherwise, you won’t be able to defeat the boss.
This game doesn’t have many hidden elements, so no hidden passages or hidden items.
I think some items don't increase stats like they should, can you check that out?
I checked all the items, and the added stats are all correct. However, I found that when you give the cross to the fairy, she increases your stats, and this time it is a percentage increase. Since there are no prompts for this in the game, you might have misunderstood. (Spoiler: it increases by 33%)
I submitted a new version(v1.1.1) with the corresponding prompts and also fixed some missing localizations, hope it can help you.
